“To serve at the altar, as to sing in the choir, is next to the priesthood the highest privilege which a human can enjoy. He represents the faithful and takes a most intimate part in the rich treasures of the church’s liturgy and ceremonial. Those sacred ceremonies should be carried out with devotion, dignity and attention to detail.”
-BERNARD CARDINAL GRIFFEN, Archbishop of Westminster.
The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy during Mass. It is a privilege that should not be taken lightly.
Men and boys of the Cathedral Parish serve each Mass. Boys are eligible to begin serving once they have made their First Holy Communion, and generally “learn by doing," beginning to serve at the Sunday Masses at which other, more experienced servers are also helping.
