The Main Event

Please see 'The Main Event' page for the full schedule!

What is the Main Event?
The Main Event is an immersion in the Catholic faith for adults that seeks to reveal the Person of Jesus Christ as the One who gives us the happiness our hearts desperately seek.  It invites all adults to follow Jesus more closely - in how we think, pray, and live—by immersing us in an understanding of the Word of God and the Catholic Faith.  It is called the Main Event because it is the most significant annual catechesis (teaching of the Catholic Faith) offered at our parish.  Over the course of the year we will 'connect the dots' and reveal the 'Big Picture' of the Catholic faith.  We will seek to answer the 'why?' behind the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church, encourage people to grow in a life of prayer, and foster a spirit of communion among people seeking to grow in their discipleship of Jesus Christ.

What is the content of the sessions of the Main Event?

The Main Event content is composed of several episodes from the Happiness series by Fr. Robert Spitzer, some speical Encountering Jesus sessions, and largely centered upon the Four Pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (The Creed, Sacraments & Liturgy, Life in Christ, Christian Prayer). Most sessions will include prayer, witness testimony, teaching, and discussion.

In addition, everyone is encouraged to bring a Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church, as we will be reading and discussing them regularly in the midst of our sessions. We will also have some copies of each for sale if people need to purchase them.  When purchasing a Bible, a Catholic New American Bible or Catholic Revised Standard Version translation is recommended.

Who should come to the Main Event?

All adults are invited to the Main Event - Catholics who want to grow in their faith, people who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, Catholics who have questions about their faith or have been away from the Church for a while - bascially, all adults who would like to discover or re-discover the riches that God wants to give them in Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church!

The Main Event is also part of the regular (required) preparation for:

  1. unbaptized adults desiring the Sacrament of Baptism;
  2. non-catholic (baptized) Christians desiring to enter full communion with the Catholic Church (wishing, that is, to “become Catholic”);
  3. adult Catholics desiring the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Where and when does the Main Event take place?
The Main Event meets on Tuesday evenings, at St. Patrick Church (404 E. Main Street). The first meeting for this year will be September 5, 2017. Sessions will be held on every subsequent Tuesday, with a break at Christmastime, with the last session of 2017 on December 19. It will start back up again January 2, 2018 and last until May 22, 2018.

Must someone participate regularly or could someone come only on occasion?
Only those preparing for a Sacrament have an obligation to attend regularly. Parishioners (or indeed anyone) interested in a particular topic are entirely welcome to come for that session only. But we do anticipate that most participants will be fairly regular in their attendance.

What should I do if I want to attend the Main Event?
Pre-registration is not strictly necessary, but if you if you plan to attend multiple sessions please contact Marc Laudonio so he can take that into consideration for organizing small groups.

Otherwise, you may simply come to the St. Patrick Parish Hall on any Tuesday we are meeting. If you would like to speak to someone first, please contact Marc Laudonio (Director of Evangelization and Catechesis) at marc@isthmuscatholic.org or by telephone at 257-5000.

And, by the way, what was that “Catholicism 101” that was mentioned in the schedule?
Catholicism 101 is a three-week introduction to the Catholic Faith that is offered on a recurring basis throughout the year. It meets simultaneously with the Main Event.
