Misa de Miércoles de Ceniza
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. We receive ashes on our foreheads to humble our hearts and remind us that life here on Earth will pass away and that we are made for a life beyond this world.
Holy Mass with the distribution of ashes will be celebrated on Ash Wednesday as follows:
- 12:10pm at St Patrick
- 5:15pm at Holy Redeemer
- 7:00pm at St Patrick
- 7:30pm at Holy Redeemer (in Spanish)
A simple parish meal will follow the 5:15 pm Mass at Holy Redeemer. This parish meal will replace our regular Parish Brunch the following weekend.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence (while all Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass on Ash Wednesday in order to begin the Lenten season with the proper attitude and reflection, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation). Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI said, "Denying material food, which nourishes our body, nurtures an interior disposition to listen to Christ and be fed by His saving word. Through fasting and praying, we allow Him to come and satisfy the deepest hunger that we experience in the depths of our being: the hunger and thirst for God."
Fasting and Abstinence Defined
Abstinence: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent, and Good Friday.
