Year of Faith
October 11, 2012 − November 24, 2013
In his 2011 Apostolic Letter entitled Porta Fidei (The Door of Faith), our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI decreed that the Church throughout the world should observe a special Year of Faith beginning on October 11, 2012.
That date marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the First Session of the Second Vatican Council in 1962. It is also the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
One focus of the Year of Faith will be the content of the Faith – that is, the teachings of the Church. Those within the Church are invited to examine what we believe so that our understanding and commitment might be deepened. The crucial text will be the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Year of Faith will also be an occasion to revisit the documents of the Second Vatican Council.
This Year of Faith is a part of the larger effort that has come to be called the New Evangelization – the effort to deepen the faith of those who believe, and to give a renewed invitation to those who have drifted away.
Another focus of the Year of Faith will be beauty. Beauty is naturally attractive to the human person. If experience beauty in our practice of the Faith, we will want more of that. On a very practical level: if we have the experience that the Mass is beautiful, we will look forward to being at Mass again. This is a very authentic experience of what the “Sabbath” is meant to be – rest from the rather bland landscape of contemporary life, and being refreshed by beauty. Beauty is also a wonderful way to reach out to those who have lost – or never known – the Faith.
The Year of Faith at the Cathedral Parish
In most months from October 2012 until October 2013, the homily on two Sundays will be devoted to documents of the Second Vatican Council.
The most important documents coming from the Council were the four Constitutions. Each of these will be the subject of four Sunday homilies over two months. Three of the smaller documents that are also of special interest will be the subject of two Sunday homilies in one summer month of 2013.
December 2012: Advent and Christmas
April & May 2013: Gaudium et Spes − Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World
June 2013: Apostolicam Actuositatem − Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity
July 2013: Dignitatis Humanae − Declaration on Religious Liberty
August 2013: Unitatis Redintegratio − Decree on Ecumenism
September & October 2013: Sacrosanctum Concilium – Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy
The primary presentations on the documents of Vatican II will be offered during homily time at the Sunday Masses.
After the homilies are given, they will be available on the website, along with more extended notes. See the column at right for information on the document currently being discussed. Click a link above for a document previously studied.
Parishioners are also invited to have follow up discussions on the documents in “neighborhood” groups, organized in the various parts of Madison and in the communities beyond the city from which our parish draws members. See the column at left for further information on those groups.
