Theology on Tap - "Choices, Choices...Discerning God's Will in Our Lives"
Thursday, May 27th:
How can we let God guide the decisions we make? Jesuit Fr. Phil Hurley, S.J., Youth & Young Adult Director of the Apostleship of Prayer, shares insights from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola that are as relevant for our lives as they were in Ignatius' own day.
Fr. Phil Hurley
Fr. Phil first came into contact with the Apostleship of Prayer as a young boy when his grandmother taught him the Daily Offering prayer. He began his ministry with the Apostleship of Prayer by organizing the music ministry team for the AoP's 2005 "Pilgrimage with the Sacred Heart of Jesus" to World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany. He has since been in consultation with the national office in planning youth and young adult initiatives, and has paired up with the national director, Fr. Kubicki, for several retreats and talks. In July 2009 he came on staff as youth and young adult director.
Fr. Phil spent his childhood in Florida and Maryland. A graduate of Loyola College in Maryland and a Jesuit since 1997, he completed philosophy studies at Saint Louis University in Missouri and theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in California. For several years he taught, coached, and led retreats at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. As a transitional deacon he served with the Catholic chaplaincy program at San Quentin State Prison in California. He was ordained a priest in June 2008 and served as assistant pastor at Old St. Joseph's Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has been involved in much youth and young adult work over the years, including retreats, conferences, social justice service programs, work in Latin America and with Spanish speakers in the U.S., pro-life advocacy, contemporary Eucharistic adoration prayer groups, and several World Youth Day pilgrimages.
Since joining the Apostleship of Prayer national office Fr. Phil has been a guest speaker in high schools, universities, parishes, and at youth and young adult events around the country. He shares practical ways of connecting faith and daily life with insights from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Apostleship of Prayer's spirituality of daily offering. He helps coordinate Jesuit pilgrim groups and events for the international World Youth Day gatherings and is director of the Hearts on Fire traveling young adult retreat program.
